11.4 ~ BULLS GAP TRAILHEAD
From the intersection of AL 21 and AL 148 in downtown
Sylacauga, AL, go east on AL 148 for 10.5 miles to the top of the
ridge, just past the 11-mile marker. There are two dirt roads here
on the left that are about 50' apart.
Turn left on the first dirt road, FS 607 / Old Rocky Mountain Road.
Go app. 50 yards to the trailhead parking area, on the left.

From the Bull Gap Trailhead parking area, go back out to AL 148.
Turn Right.
Go 7.5 miles to FS 603. Turn left. You'll see a FS 603
sign on the right after you make the turn.
Go 2.6 miles to FS 603A. Turn left. When you come to the fork in
the road, with a yellow FS gate at the left fork, go right for 350’ to
the trailhead parking area.

Turn right from the Trailhead Parking Area and go 175 feet. The
trail goes into the woods on the left.
HISTORY 2009 ~ As planned, the Forest Service has purchased
the Evergreen tract from the Conservation Fund. The Pinhoti
Trail corridor through here is now protected by the USFS.
0.1 ~ INFO BOARD
There are a lot of switchbacks ahead so keep a sharp eye out for
blazes. Go left at the Info Board.
0.4 ~ BOGG AREA ~ SW
There is a patch of creek reeds down on the left with a good
seasonal spring running through it.
0.6 ~ FS ROAD
You’ll see a good FS gravel road running parallel to the trail,
down the hill to the left.
1.1 ~ SPRING ~ SW
SW ~ Down the hill to your left.
1.3 ~ RED COCKADED WOODPECKER NESTING AREA
This large Forest Service RCW nesting area is easily distinguishable by the heavily thinned forest with not much standing other than tall pines. It’s fairly likely that you will either see or hear the woodpeckers. Please try not to disturb them or their young families. With the abundance of tall grass you may also see snakes sunning themselves on the trail in the warmer months.
